For four years during the 90’s, Leitner rented an apartment in Fritzl’s house. Soon after he moved in, a neighbor and a friend of Elisabeth’s told him that Elisabeth had been raped repeatedly by her father and had fled to Vienna, but had come back after the police brought her back.
But since they were both scared of Mr. Fritzl, they never reported him.
Another renter, Alfred Dubanovsky, rented an apartment from Mr. Fritzl for 12 years. Below him, Elisabeth and her children were living their very own hell on earth. Sometimes, Mr. Dubanovsky says, he heard strange knockings from the basements. He thoughtMr. Fritzl was often behaving strangely, carting food down into the basement during the night and spending hours in the basement. But it never occured to him what was going on in Mr. Fritzl’s domain below ground.
